INDIGO 101 • Beginner Dyeing Class, September 24 (12-5 pm)

Examined the history, alchemy and beauty of the natural Indigo plant, various sacred traditions of creating indigo vats, as well as the delicate process of indigo dyeing with expert dyer Niki Livingston of Lookout & Wonderland. You will also learn hands on how to create a chemical free, food grade organic indigo vat that is easy to create at home for a day of dyeing. Then learn the foundation techniques of the art of shibori, along with the conceptual ideas surrounding surface design concerning ready made garments and flat surfaces.

SKILLS LEARNED • Basic Knowledge of the indigo plant and tradition. How to create a chemical free, food grade organic indigo vat. How to properly prepare fabric for dyeing, dyeing with an indigo vat and proper finishing of the dyeing process. A foundation to understanding and creating shibori designs.

MATERIALS REQUIRED • 2 smallish (tee/scarf/pillowcase/napkins) pre-washed items made from natural fibers (cotton/linen/silk)
